The biggest misconception in webdesign: trustworthiness
I have visited so many websites reading about companies blabbering on about how trustworthy a company they are, that you could trust all your savings to them. As if trustworthiness is some form of characteristic that they possess. That is one of the greatest misconceptions that trustworthiness is something that you automatically can contribute to all your services and offerings.
Its understandable that companies see themselves as trustworthy - what better than to make the consumer feel that they can safely buy that €200 pair of sunglasses, or that €18.000 water cleaning system. The word "trustworthy" is becoming more and more abused as e-commerce continues to boom.
I went to my dictionary and looked up the word and found the following:
trust-wor-thy (adjective): able to be relied on as honest or truthful
Trustworthiness is the sum of all your actions that in the end contribute to making your company "trustworthy". The written and visual elements of your website all contribute to being a relied upon source, stray once - and you will be duly punished. Webdesign contributes greatly to creating a sense of trustworthiness, but it is also necessary to reflect on the fact that poor design can and will often lead to your company being labelled as "unreliable".
First and foremost, trustworthy webdesign needs to appeal to your target group. If you are designing a site aimed at an inexperienced user group then you must take into consideration their abilities. If you manage to master this then you will unlock the path to earning their trust.
Secondly, your design (including your code) needs to be cross-browser complaint. Why should a person viewing your site in IE 7 be seeing sharp corners where a person in Safari is seeing nice rounded corners. Making sure that your site is appearing the (almost) same way everytime called upon will again add to your trustworthiness factor.
Thirdly, endorsements by big brands that have built up their trustworthiness factor contribute immensely to you. For example, an e-commerce stamp of approval from a dedicated organization, or simply a Verified by Visa logo.
There is no concise guide to creating a trustworthy site - but there are definitely measures that can contribute greatly. If you want to go into more detail or read more on this then visit usability guru Jakob Nielsen's following article: Trustworthiness in Webdesign
Text Area Word Counter
I needed to get a word counter for a text area that could calculate the amount of words and then multiply that number to get a price for carrying out a translation - you can see the script in action here: http://easytranslate.dk/da/korrekturlaesning.html
The line with pri.value = cnt*5; The five is the multiplication factor you need to change.
The script:
| <label style="width: 150px;"><br />Insert your tekst here:</label><br /> <textarea rows="15" id="text_12" title="" cols="60" name="text_12" onkeyup="wordcount(this.value)"></textarea> <script type=""text/javascript""> var cnt; function wordcount(count) { var words = count.split(/\s/); cnt = words.length; var ele = document.getElementById('w_count'); ele.value = cnt; var pri = document.getElementById('price'); pri.value = cnt*5; } document.write("<input type=hidden id=w_count size=14 readonly>"); document.write("<input type=text id=price size=14 readonly>"); </script> DKK incl. tax for your translation. |

Is SEO the Devil?
No.
There are many skeptics when it comes to SEO, stating that poor content can be promoted through effective Search Engine Optimization meaning that valuable content falls down the ladder on search listings. To some extent this is also true, but who would want to invest time and money in poor content? Search Engines try to evaluate content, to the extent that is permitted by robots and algorithms, punishing poorly written and illogical articles.
You might think that we need to take the perspective of pro SEO because we live in the world of delivering such services. So trying to remain neutral we will also present some of the benefits of SEO. First and foremost organizations investing resources in their web affairs should likewise be rewarded if they adhere to a high standard of information value. SEO's are actually vastly contributing to others problems online. How? Through forum participation, SEO'ers are able to generate more and more links for their projects through signatures on their posts. No, the posts are not SPAM, the general forum spirit and guidelines in the web community ensures that practices are maintained focusing on solving these problems.
Secondly, companies offering the best prices on certain products that have done effective SEO are more than welcome by skeptics. Hmmm. That is a bit hypocritical but the fact is that SEO is benefitting is in many ways that we do not consider on a day-to-day basis.
What are your thoughts on the benefits/problems of SEO?
It's All About Speed
It seems that the Google Algorithm will change slightly in 2010 to incorporate a "speed" dimension. More specifically, Google will be looking to give sites that load quickly a credit or two in upcoming search results. According to Matt Cutts, Page Speed could easily be something that will become more important. The logic behind it seems reasonable as Google wants to present the "best" search results for the end-user and fast loading sites are definitely something that can be valued. With an increase in mobile browsing, this may also send webdesigners a clear message that they may as well design "lite" sites that are few in images and that load quickly for users.
The question however becomes whether a lack of images and graphics that are often needed to illustrate key points will be punished in search results - if so then will there be a decrease in the overall quality of search results?

Blue is the new Blue
When designing your new web solution have in mind what the current trends are, what shapes, what colors and what features are most used and more importantly are they done so with success? With the unmistakable power of Social Media Platforms in today's internet hemisphere it is evident that there is a common trend amongst some of these services; the color blue.

These five services use these shades of blues in different ways on their homepages, but why? Is it to create a shared understanding amongst users, that they are currently on a Web 2.0 piece of land? Is it to associate to the other services? or is blue just a fashionable color?
Blue is definitely not the most fashionable color at the time of writing, a role which has been recently evacuated by purple. The purple trend is now over, thank god, but we still see blue as a thriving color in webdesign. The royal blue gives a sense of security (f.x. look at bank websites - Danske Bank) but at the same time it also has an innovative quality that associates to being on the forefront of technology (f.x. look at Philips, Samsung, Skype). All these different examples rely on the qualities and inherent characteristics associated with the color blue. Blue is here to stay for that reason, and will never become yesterday's purple.
What color is your business using? Is there any associated reasons with the choice of color?
Update your CMS site on-the-go
Here at ennovation we have now tested and implemented new functionality in all our web solutions. All services are turning towards mobility and the "cloud" phenomenon, and to accomodate this developing trend we see it fit that users should be able to update their content on the go.
The popular iPhone has a great little application available for download through the iTunes store called the "Joomla Admin Mobile" which provides a great interface for editing content which has not been possible through the Safari browser. After having downloaded and installed the application on your phone then you need to get a hold of the extension for your CMS site that facilitates communication between your CMS site and your mobile device.
So what are the advantages of being able to update on-the-go? Personally, I feel that being able to make rapid changes and having the correct information displayed is key to having a trustworthy website - this little tool enables you to do that. One can rightfully question whether or not it becomes too much with yet another device and way of updating a site - however it is simply just another option for users to help them maintain their sites.
How much should you spend on going mobile? The small application will set you back 10 USD, and the small extension can be downloaded for free from CMS Market. Your webdeveloper will need to spend some time on setting it up to meet your exact needs, which could mean that the current site needs small adjustments.
If you have any questions on updating your CMS site on-the-go then feel free to contact us.
